Coronavirus updates – for Sports Centre customers

Update 12th September 2021

Following the move to beyond Level 0 on Monday 9th August, we wanted to make you aware of a few changes to the Centre and our services:

Fitness Suite

We are delighted to let you know that as of Monday 13th September 2021, we will be increasing capacity on the gym floor and you will no longer be required to book time slots if you wish to use the Main Gym.

We ask that you check in at the reception desk before making your way up to the gym. This will allow us to log your visit on our system and ensure that we are compliant with Test and Protect protocols set out by the Scottish Government.

The busy times within the gym is usually from Monday to Thursday from 5pm – 8.30pm.  If you prefer to work out when it’s a little quieter, you may prefer to avoid these times.

Please remember to give other gym users as much space as possible when exercising. You are required to continue to practice good hygiene by wiping down any equipment that you use before and after use with the spray and paper towels that have been provided.

Weights Room

The capacity for the free weights room has been increased to two people per session.  Please book your space in advance via our online booking system or by emailing sportsreception@qmu.ac.uk

Again, we ask that you give each other as much room as possible when using the area.  Please remember to wipe down each piece of equipment that you use and return all weights and bars to the appropriate racks.

Fitness Classes

All of the fitness classes will now take place in the Studio. Classes can be booked via our online booking system or by emailing sportsreception@qmu.ac.uk

Studio Pods

The studio pods will still be available for booking when the studio is not being used for fitness classes.

Sports Hall

The Sports Hall is now available to book for all organised and recreational activities.

Face Coverings

As per government guidance, we ask that you continue to wear a face covering when entering the Centre and when moving through the corridors.  You don’t need to wear a face covering whilst exercising.

Please use the lockers provided to store personal belongings and avoid taking bags into the gym. All lockers in both changing rooms and in the corridors are now available to use.

To help keep everyone safe and your visit to the Centre enjoyable, please continue to:

  • Wear your face covering when not partaking in your activity.
  • Respect the personal space of others - give people space!
  • Clean your equipment before and after use.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell
  • Book online

We will update you as and when we make further changes and we hope you enjoy your next visit to the Centre.

What we are doing to keep you safe

In order to make the Centre as safe as possible, we have made some changes to our facilities and how they operate. Our selection of changes have been guided by industry and Government experts, including, UK Active, the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland. The changes also enable us to continue to comply with local government advice and guidelines in regards to personal hygiene and social distancing.

Safety measures that we have put in place are:

  • We are cleaning and disinfecting our facilities with an enhanced cleaning process, using detergent and disinfectant to sanitize all gym equipment.
  • We have protective screens at our reception desk and have provided the Sports team with PPE.
  • We supply disinfectant spray and disposable hand towels so that members can clean the equipment before and after use.
  • There are hand sanitizing stations available throughout the Centre.

Jonathan Perkins
“The convenient location of QMU’s Sports Centre means that I can easily fit my gym sessions in around my busy work schedule during the day or in the evenings. It’s close to Musselburgh train station too, so I can be back home in Edinburgh in just a few minutes. The staff are really friendly and professional. They’re always on hand to offer personalised advice and tips on how to make the most of your gym sessions too.”
